A ship has inertia, just like a car, but unlike a car, a ship can't stop quickly. The friction force of the ship on the water and the car wheels on the asphalt differs very significantly, so in order to control the ship, you need to calculate actions for several moves ahead.
The larger the ship, the more advanced control actions need to be performed to maneuver. Try taxiing out of the port on your assigned vessel without damaging the surrounding ships, yachts, and boats.
